The Coliseum
The coliseum is the most iconic Roman building ever built. It could change from staging a gladiator battle to staging makeshift sea and navy battles with boats fighting to the death. In the last years of the coliseums use it was used as a multi level fighting arena, with secret doors and elevators to hoist the gladiators up on the higher levels. It was the largest and the most magnificent building the Romans had ever seen, built by thousands of men, mainly slaves. It was made out of concrete on the bottom levels and wood on the top levels. The architects did not put wood on the bottom due to its high risk of catching on fire and destroying the whole thing. A plumbing system was installed to pump water into the coliseum for the naval battles. It even had a drainage system which was centuries ahead of its time. The coliseum was designed by having two amphitheatres put together to make a curved building. The seating arrangements were modern in design with numbered seated areas.
